When we conducted a poll on the topic of favourite Broadway plays, one of the top choices was The Phantom of the Opera. No wonder! The play is an absolute classic, and it has been performed on Broadway for an astonishing 23 years... and counting!
The novel was originally written by a French writer Gaston Leroux, but since we're talking about Broadway here, we are interested the most in the hit musical which was created by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is a compelling story of Christine Daae, who becomes a love interest of an disfigured musical genius.
Let's look at the numbers:
* The show has been seen in 149 cities in 25 countries, and has played to over 100 million people.
* Total worldwide box office receipts of over 5,1 billion dollars - highest-grossing entertainment event of all time!
* Over 30 different productions all over the world
* Ten presitgious awards, hundreds of nominations
Plus a hit movie, and much more!
As said in the beginning, January 2011 marks the 23rd year of the play being performed on Broadway. Surely if there is one single play that is a must-see when one visits Broadway... it's The Phantom of the Opera!
