or actually the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre.

Antoinette Perry (June 27, 1888 – June 28, 1946) : an actress from Denver. After several years of performing on Broadway she decided to become also a director and producer. She did that succesfully in an era when women in the theater were generally actresses, costume designers, or choreographers. The Tony Awards are her namesake.

The woman helped found the American Theatre Wing which is known from its providing entertainment to servicemen engaged in the World War II.
Thanks to "Toni's" colleauges, who wanted to commemorate her after her death, the annual Tony Awards have been created. Since 1947 "distinguished achievements in theatre" have been marked out by the prestigious Tony Awards.

THE BROADWAY LEAGUE

It's a "national trade association for Broadway industry" which groups theater owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers of theaters in NYC and more than 250 other cities in North America. The organization welcomes also suppliers of goods to the theatrical industry. The Broadway League was established in 1930 to fight the ticket speculation, thus to fight free market competition and do otherwise- agree on one price. It functions as a trade union concentrating people involved in the theater industry.

THE 2010 TONY AWARDS

The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League every year in NYC. The awards are given to Broadway productions and performances and for a regional theater. Apart from that there are also discretionary non-competitive awards:
